Maxxis Razr Tires

As seasons change, so do the needs of the off-roader.  When the summer sun bakes over 100 degrees for weeks on end, pack up the quads and head for higher ground and hopefully cooler temps.  It's time to put the paddle tires away for a few months, and look for some good traction for the trail.

To re-shoe your ride,  turn to your friends to Maxxis. my 250EX is primarily ridden in sand most of the year, but for the mud riding season I was looking for superior traction and puncture resistance for those anticipated sharp rocks, limbs and nails.  To make this a truly multi-use tire, I also needed to consider traction on the sand as well as excellent high speed handling.  The RAZR looks to be the perfect fit.

The front tires feature a raised center ridge to provide precise steering. The tire comes in a 4-ply or 6-ply version. I chose the 6-ply version for optimum puncture resistance. The tires are very popular in the Grand National series and have a race compound for superior traction. Another bonus from the racing heritage is that the tires are very light! This means we will not lose any precious power due to heavy tires.

I will be checking in to claims that the Razr's tend to trade durability for performance, allowing for greater bite & handling.  And while our application will typically not involve much mud, the wide placement of the tread is designed to be self-cleaning so you boggers can go at it!

PC Racing Scratch Removal Product Review

I recently purchased a scratch removal kit from PC racing. Well all I half to say is that they suck! My ATV is a 2004 Honda Fourtrax 250TM it only had a few little scratches on it, but I hate scratches, so I followed the directions that were given to me on the box.

Here are the directions that were given to me:

1.Scratches are removed with a course, wet sandpaper

2.Then the plastic needs to be sanded smooth with a lighter grit sandpape

3.Apply Plastic Renew in slow, even strokes. Once you have applied the first coat, wait about five minutes before putting on a second coat.

4.For a finish that is smooth to the touch, buff the plastic with fine steel wool.

5.Re-apply Plastic Renew. Four or more coats will ensure maximum glass and durability.

I thought that my ATV would look the same as the plastic on the website, but I was wrong. In Step 5 it says, “Four or more coats will ensure maximum glass and durability” only 5 coats of the Plastic Renew Chemical. I have put about 10 or more and mine doesn’t look anywhere near that. It made more scratches than it took off! I’m only 12 years old and I have a summer job and I don’t have any money to get new plastic or do something about it because I spent my last 30.00 on this plastic renew. So I have to wait a year before I can do something. I’m never buying plastic renew again. And I don’t recommend it to anyone.

ATV Stealth Exhaust

quiet

  The Stealth Exhaust worked well!

As a hunter, many hours are spent preseason scouting. Preliminary scouting can be done from the seat of your ATV. That’s right, just driving slowly along old logging trails, farm fields and mountain passes can give a hunter a pretty good idea which areas are worth more effort. In the past, while quietly traveling down a trail it would be nothing to see a deer jump out and quickly run for cover. As hunters, we are always trying to be as quiet as possible. Giving the machine only enough throttle to make it move slowly. Regardless of how subdued we try to be our machines can still be heard from a few hundred yards away.
One of my biggest concerns has always been the ride into my hunting spot in the early morning hours. Each time my ATV makes the slow crawl up the mountain trail, leading close to my hunting area, it’s hard not to imagine that every buck on the mountain has heard the ATV’s puttering engine .
What if you could reduce the exhaust noise by almost half? Would any of you be interested? ATV Stealth Exhaust has put together a quality exhaust package. This bolt on unit will reduce the decibel level considerably. We installed and tested the ATV Stealth Exhaust using a 1999, Sportsman 500 4x4. The unit’s owner Tracy Bear has always looked for ways to make his ATV less noticeable in the woods. When we asked Tracy if he would be interested in the evaluation; well lets just say, Tracy liked the idea.

Introducing Shok-SpotRTM

The First Helmet Sensor

Helmet manufacturers warn users that a motorcycle helmet is good for one impact, and one impact only. After that, the helmet’s shell and impact-absorbing liner may be compromised. A visual examination will not always reveal helmet damage, which can occur either in a riding accident or during general abusive treatment.

For these reasons, helmet manufacturers instruct users to either return the helmet to the factory for inspection, or discard the helmet, if it has seen a significant impact. In fact the Federal Govt. requires helmet manufacturers to affix a label warning all helmet users:``... If helmet experiences a severe blow, return it to the manufacturer for inspection, or destroy it and replace it....'' Shok-SpotRTM helps riders follow this important rule.

Parents will appreciate the Shok-SpotRTM since it’s not always easy to keep track of how their kid’s helmets have been treated, on or off the bike. And the riding public in general will notice an increased awareness to the critical subject of helmet care.

The patent-pending Shok-SpotRTM utilizes a highly reliable method of shock detection. Once the sensor turns red, indicating a severe impact, it cannot be reset. The acceleration level required to “trip” Shok-SpotRTM has been carefully selected through extensive helmet testing.

Hot Grips

As ATV enthusiasts, we like to ride year-round, regardless of weather conditions. However, enduring the long Pennsylvania winter can get frustrating. One of the main problems we have are those darn cold hands. Sometimes they get so cold it becomes a control issue. Yeah, sure we have tried electric gloves or even putting on more than one pair, but both of these alternatives are uncomfortable. The best solution to cold hands that we've seen so far is Hot Grips. These super-handy items replace the handgrips on your quad and are heated by utilizing your ATVs' electrical system. For this magnificent idea we can thank Jim Hollander, a member of the United States Enduro Team. After experiencing a loss in time in one of his International Six-Day events due to extreme cold, he came up with the idea for heated handlebar grips. The grips are made of Kraton rubber (soft and flexible) with hot leads and ground wires that let electrical current flow through the copper core. They are slightly thicker than factory grips, more comfortable and have been universally praised by snowmobilers, motorcyclists, motocross riders and, of course, ATV riders. Each grip is fabricated to fit whichever your toy might be.

Riding in the cold

We tested the Hot Grips with an ambient air temperature of 30-degrees. Not extremely cold, but riding at 20 MPH will make the wind chill a mere 4-degrees. The grips worked extremely well, even when placing cold hands on the grips, they warm right up. They worked so well that at 30-degree temps, we used the "low" setting. For curiosity sake we took our gloves off to see if it still kept our hands warm. Palms and fingers were kept real toasty, but the backs got a little chilly, so we suggest wearing gloves at all times. The grips take approximately 30 seconds to warm up and a couple of minutes to heat to capacity. They do cool down rather fast.
We give the Hot Grips a warm thumbs up for cold weather riding. Installation is fairly simple, and the thickness and texture of the Kraton rubber exceed the comfort of OEM grips. The purchase price of will seem trivial when compared with cold hands out on the trail.

Mair Atv Plastic

With the new Maier plastics on the ATV, you will be amazed at how much the overall appearance of the ATVInstalled Maier plastics. is enhanced. It will once again resemble the show room look of buying a new ATV, provided that you have cleaned and cared for the other components of your ATV in the past. The new race cut front section gives an awesome aerodynamic style to the bodywork. The new race plastics come only with a front number plate (white) and two Maier stickers. You can dress up the plastics with a graphic kit, sticker packages, or just “Leave well enough alone” the decision is yours to contemplate. Another decision you will have to make is where you will mount the key switch and neutral light since there are no pre-drilled holes for them. This allows for creativity, you do not necessarily have to mount the key switch in the plastics; it can be mounted in a discreet location in the framework.

When in the cockpit of the ATV, you will recognize Cockpit view.that the rider’s field of vision is enhanced for upcoming objects in your path. This is aided by the race cut fenders; they allow constant vision of the front wheels and their path on the terrain. We loved having the cut fenders and increased vision for several different reasons. When riding at high speeds, especially over bumpy terrain, the aerodynamics of the short fenders allows the ATV to Sucked to the ground.feel as if it were sucked to the ground. We noticed a slight increase in speed due to having less air drag to slow you down, when compared to the larger OEM style fenders. On the more aggressive side of things, like the racetrack, the Maier Rhythm sectionplastics were again a big hit with the ATVC riders. Whether we were blasting through a rhythm section of whoops or launching off jumps, having an unobstructed view of where the front wheels will land provides reassurance to the rider. Jumping, cornering, or whoops whichever we were doing, the 426EX felt sleek and smooth cutting through the air withBecoming airborne. the Maier plastics as if it were a hot knife gliding through butter. While riding trails on one of our few days of recreation there seemed to be one question constantly asked by fellow ATVers we met and talk to during a break. They almost always asked, “ I bet the cut fenders get the rider really muddy! Right?” In reply to that question, the 426EX is set up with +2, +1 A-arms so most of the dirt and mud gets thrown past the rider. In the trail setting the 426EX rider did not accumulate much more dirt on them than any other sport/performance ATV rider. Keep in mind most of the caked on mud and dirt you see on the racers and their ATVs come from the racers in front of them. Anyway isn’t getting dirty while Atving part of the fun anyway? What it comes down to is that all the ATVC test riders agreed, they loved having the added benefits of the Maier race cut fenders, and would prefer them over the OEM style fenders any day.

   Shredding With GBC

Green Ball Corporation or GBC as you may commonly know them, equipped our 426EX with a set of their X-tread pattern.Shredder R/A front and rear tires. The Shredders use an X design tread pattern on both the front and rear tires. The X lug pattern on the rear tires has proven itself in providing excellent forward traction and having a great side bite for sliding situations. Depending on the riding terrain you spend most of your time in, Great forward traction!GBC offers the rear Shredders in a 2, 4, or 6-ply rating to cover any riding atmosphere form the race track to the most rouged trails. We opted for the 4-ply rating to accommodate our frequent visitations for both the track and trail systems. The rear Shredder tires come in a large variety of sizes to choose from, even too many to list in this article (See bottom of the page for a list). They range from the smallest size of 18x9.5x8 to the largest 22x11x9, and just about everything in between.

The front Shredders also use the X lug style pattern, however they differ in the characteristic of having a continuous raised rib in the center of the tire’sRaised center rib. lug pattern. This raised rib was created for a better bite when steering in loose conditions. GBC presents their front tires in a 4-ply rating, which tends to be the happy median for all riding conditions. The sizes on the front Shredders come in two choices, 21x7x10 or 22x8x10. A trait of both the front and rear Shredders is that they have a yellow R/A logo on the inner and outer sidewalls of each tire. This insignia gives the tires an enhanced appearance and an unmistaken identity while riding.
